Thanks TJ, glad you enjoyed it. Sorry to hear about your cable trouble. It mirrors problems I’ve had with Apple over power adaptors.

Until this model, you could replace the thicker cable (the one that goes to the wall), but not the thinner one which goes to the mac. Of course, the thick cable never frays, but the thin one…

On this model, they changed it so you can finally change the thinner cable, but in return they stopped providing the thicker cable…

I can’t remember how many power adaptors I’ve bought. They all ended up fraying. I don’t take the laptop out of the house much. I know how to wrap the cable properly when I do.

Eventually I found out that if they fray like this Apple will replace them free-of-charge. After I got over the annoyance of how many hundreds of pounds (literally) I’d spent on adaptors in the last few years, I then set about getting mine replaced.

You can guess the argument that ensued as you’ve had similar. Accusations of all sorts. Completely false. This happened twice on two different adaptors. One in Spain, where I ended up having to speak to the store manager (not for the last time), and one in London.

In Spain, after I spoke to the manager, he replaced it fairly quickly (but that was after a lot of nonsense with the staff), but in London I couldn’t believe what they put me through.

This highlighted another flaw with Apple. They know when you buy the laptop by the serial number. It’s how your warranty kicks in. But I’ve bought some over the years from the airport (Dixons in the UK). This particular laptop I was replacing the power supply from had the warranty date set about 2 or 3 months before I bought it! I’d previously spoken to Apple about this and they admitted sometimes the date gets set when a reseller gets the computer and I would have to send the receipt in to them to prove the date of purchase otherwise they’d go with the date the reseller got the stock. I couldn’t find the receipt at the time, and Dixons refused to send one unless I went back to the store at the airport to get one.

Of course, it turned out this was the model I was trying to replace the power supply for in London. I ended up nearly missing my flight back to Spain because the assistant demanded I go through old bank statements online with my phone to prove when I bought it. Even then, as I told her before I started looking, it only showed a price paid to Dixons on a certain date. It didn’t prove what she wanted it to.

When she finally agreed, after an hour or so, she wanted me to go queue at the (very busy) genius bar to start the process of getting the replacement. Even though she knew I was literally about to miss a plane on the other side of London. She was simply being vindictive. I finally got the supply without visiting the genius bar, but left feeling even more angry towards Apple.

This was part of what I meant in the story by they have been testing my patience for some time…
